Message: As mentioned before, I also remember John Golden, the Park Guard, from West End Park. He was a good man. He once showed me a photo of himself, as a Park officer, on horseback. I think, at one time, way back, he patrolled both Canby Park(then called Canby Woods) and West End Park on horseback. When I was growing up, he was just at West End Park, and walked back and forth from his home in the 1100 block S. Broom St., just several doors down from my Grandmother's house.

Message: I remember the two mill races that ran next to the Brandywine. I recall the large mill stone at the foot of Adams Street. This mill run now supplies drinking water. The sides and bottom are cement. The other mill race was the dye race that came from the paper mill and was next to the north side of the river. The bottom and sides were mud and the water seem to run a different color each day, sometimes with a caustic smell. This race has been covered over as if it never existed.

I remember one of the sisters, not sure what one, but I remember her as pretty stern and mean. Of course, this was in the eyes of a young boy. She probably had to be that way to survive us kids. Did you have a brother named Danny? I think he was in my class. Back in those days there was no shortage of Kellys. ;-)
A couple names I remember - George Dolan, Francis Mushnick(SP), Myron can't remember his last name, Linda Barlow. Wish I could remember more - good times in Wilmington.

My Dad, Jim Bryan moved around a bit, often from Balt back to Wilmington and back to Balt.. Not sure which schools he attended, but I know he was good friends with Tony Padovani, whose parents owned a shoe store across the street on Madison. He distinctly remember's Mama Padovani and her pasta. He wasn't really part of the Madison 'gang', but did do socialize some with them. He ran in to Humphreys at a movie theater where he was working. Humphrey's was older, Dad a couple or three years younger, but still got him to back down. He watched his back after that.

Dad's older brother was "Chuck" or "Chookie" or "Harvey". His father worked for the railroad. Distant cousins in the local pd.

going to Philly and paying for a seat to watch the Phillies. They would "pass the hat" during each game
and you gave what you wanted. No questions asked.

Message: I recall a very small shop on the corner with a small back yard full of junk. The building I'm thinking of was a long building on Concord Ave.

Here's another memory - If the A & P was at 27th and Market there were garages off 26th Street between Market and Lamotte. An old man with a dog used to live in one of those garages. Does anyone remember him? He and the dog used to walk up and down Market towards Concord Avenue.

The building I'm talking about would have faced Concord Avenue. I think it was a long thin building.

There were offices in the front on Tatnall Street. That's all I remember about it. Anyone else remember it?

Share your memories of the area near Mousley's Row. Was there a factory on concord Avenue and Tatnall Street - if you were on Mousley's Row it would have been across the street from the houses.

It may be a few days before I'm on line again to pick up any answers. My computer died and the library is closed tomorrow.

Message: Ray: I remember those large steel doors which went into Blumenthal's/Bloomies Leather Factory. Sometimes they were open, sometimes they were shut. Remember the old water tower for the company ? My uncle, Hank Szatkowski, said he climbed the ladder to the top, once, on a dare.

Talking about dares and hills, I remember taking a dare, when I was about 12 years old, to ride my bike, a J.C. Higgins, at full speed, down Linden St., from S. Broom to S. Jackson, without slowing down/ braking, or looking to the left or right at the intersections of Franklin, Harrison, Van Buren or Jackson. And that was without lookouts. God was on my side that day; no cars were crossing the intersections. Never tried it again !

We had no heat up on the third floor bedrooms and brought down our school clothes and dressed in the kitchen that mom heated up with the gas burners on stove. Oatmeal or cream of wheat in large pot on stove ready for us to eat. Frozen laundry from clothes line out back brought in and hung up on radiators to defrost. Penny candy, bakery fresh donuts, hot coffee and tea pots on stove, listening to the radio for weather reports, hop scotch, card games, dad reading the N.J. morning and evening paper. :-)

Heated our kitchen with gas stove burners in mornings for heat. Seems our coal fire was allowed to burn out each night, my mother feared the coal gas might leak into the bed rooms. Sending away for premiums with boxtops and coin took 6 to 8 weeks to receive. Wouldn't trade it for the world though, growing up in Wilmington was great. Bananas at 7¢ a pound

Listening to Baby Snooks and a host of other radio programs around the kitchen table in the evening. The kitchen was the only room with heat - which came from the gas oven.
