Message: Jerry T. - "The Castle" was known by a couple different names. It was a mansion house known as: The Dunleith Mansion, Rogers Mansion and The Castle. Annie Rogers (Zinn) duPont was married to William duPont. I believe the mansion house was left to Annie R. duPont or to Marion duPont. I have some information but I'll need to look it up when I get home. Annie Rogers was the daughter of Thomas Rogers who was involved in the locomotive industry. One road is called Rogers Road and the elementary school was named, Dunleith Community School. The development was created for WWII african american soldiers alongside the old Army barracks, Millside. The developer was Leon N. Weiner who received recognition from then President Lyndon Johnson. I'm having so much trouble finding any pictures or information. I have checked with the DE Historical Society and Hagley Museum. Thanks for your time.

the Bonkowski house ran into the side of the
home I'm talking about and Bonkowski's house
was on the North West corner of Chestnut and
Jackson Sts.

Message: RAY JUBB : when I was a small kid in the 50's, I remember that my mother was friends with a lady, named Helen Kendzierski, who owned the bar( think it was called Helen's or Helen's Café) on Chestnut and Porter Sts. I wonder if she was the mother of your Drum Majorette ? There was also a Gerri Scholato who lived in the 900 block Elm St., but when she got married to Joe Rybaltowski(Fisher), also from the same block, they moved to a porch house in the 1000 block of Chestnut St. She was also a very pretty girl, and about the same age as you and my brother, Fred.

Message: Jerry T. They were Firemen. That little clip brought back some fond memories. I used to be
in love with the Drum Majorette from the Polaski
Legion when I was a kid. She was a couple years
older than me but I thought she was the most
beautiful thing in the world, her name was
conjerski(Spell?). She lived in the 1000 block of
Chestnut St. Her first name I believe was Gerry.
She wound up married to a Firemen name Marty
Rossiter.

Message: Ray Jubb : I'm pretty sure that the following clip is from a Pulaski Day Parade coming down S. Harrison St. (you can see St. Hedwig's Church in the background ). I can't tell whether that's the W.P.D. or W.F.D. marching in the parade ? Brought back some memories. I marched in those parades with Boy Scout Troop # 7 from Pulaski Legion in 1959, 60, and 61.

Message: I recall that picnic and the parking area on Alapocas Road. Our family had a picnic there July of '46. There were a few small fire places that stood about one foot high, with a heavy metal grate for cooking. Bar-B-Que grilles at that time were just becoming popular and of course were portable. Been about 65 years since I was on that road.

I remember back in the 1950's, there used to be a parking area and several public BBQ grills for having family picnics. If they are still there, you can't see them from the road. The pull-off is now blocked by wooden posts and "No Parking" signs are all along the road.
There is also a "Walking Trail" near the same location, but again, no place for parking.

Does anyone remember the double water fountain and the clock atop a tall iron ornate post in front of Saint John's Episcopal Church at Concord Pike and Market? My father used to tell me that the tall side of the fountain was for horses and the low one was for dogs. There was also a horse tether ring imbeded in the curb on West 23rd Street about half way up the block from Market Street.

When I was a tot my father made dandilion wine and he would taste it every day to check its progress. By the time it was due to be ready, it was gone. :@

The webmaster Ken, updates it manually once a month. He had many SPAM attacks and lost some of his guest book data a couple years ago. After rebuilding what he could, he decided to go this way.
When you get back on his site, check out the AFKN sound clip I sent in.
I was in a HAWK Missile unit outside of Camp Page 1963-1964. I had a critical MOS at the time and would have made Spec 6, E-6 if I re-up'ed, but decided to get out, unknowing that Vietnam action was a month away.
I have over 500 photos from there that I want to post and present to Ken for his site.
Once you are on board, Ken usually sends out an E-mail to everyone to let them know of the update.

Message: Ray : thanks for the story. I vaguely remember hearing about a lady grocery store owner on the corner of Elm St. and Maryland Ave., who was stabbed to death during a robbery in her store. I was a small lad then, so it would have been in the early to mid 50's. I ran into her grandson, some years back, a Catholic priest. He was older than me, probably closer in age to you and my brother, Fred. His last name started with an Mo, and ended with a ski.

I had an uncle who sometimes on Sundays, went to a place on a side street(N. Pine), just off East 4th to get a half pint or two. Maybe he was the buyer you were looking for.

But at this age whose is? I also know there must

Burglary or robbery now and again(but seldom). I may
have been one of the first Officers(not sure)to use a
radio device. The put me on the corner of 3rd and
Market St. with a small radio that you could send on
but not receive(one way radio). I was to sit there on
the corner with a bottle filled with grape juice and in
old ragged clothes to look like a bum. A bootlegger
was known to purchase his cases of half pints at the
liquor store across the Street, when he loaded up and
left I was to notify Central and tell them in which
direction he was headed. Transporting over a certain
amount of alcohol in those days was illegal. Every-
thing went acording to plan except Central never got
the message, so much for the new and modern
communication system.

Message: Maureen, I moved out of St. Pat's parish to St. Helena's in the late 50's when my parents relocated to Phila. Pike and Marsh Road. I am not sure when St. Pat's school closed. It is so sad that so many of the parish schools are closing. I guess since there are so few nuns left that it is financially impossible for the parishes to support the schools when teachers have to be hired. I remember one nun (we had Franciscans) telling us that the nuns made "a penny in the morning and a penny in the afternoon"! Gotta pay teachers a lot more than that. My own kids were educated in both public and Catholic schools depending what state we were in and the proximity of the parish schools; however, my grand-children all went to thirteen years of Catholic schools and one grandson graduated this past May from Notre Dame - go Irish!
