Message: Remembering those long walks to Price's Run to go swimming during Summer vacation. Loved that pool even after walking from Happy Valley. Wore our swim trunks under our clothes, stayed at the pool until we were water logged. Long walk back home, we would drink from garden hose at a house of opportunity. Never figured out why so thirsty after being surrounded by water all day.

It was my understanding that the diner was intended to be temporary. I think after that was torn down there was a gas station there for a while, but not sure. Anyway - I understand the park there now is used by drug dealers. So much for Brandywine Village as a place to brag about. :-| :-(

I went there from about 1935 or 36 until 1969. The diner down at the next corner, Concord Ave & Market Street was Hollywood Diner. We went there every week after bowling. It was a "jumping" spot. Message: At the end of the school year, St. Patrick's altar boys and choir girls were treated to a bus trip to either Riverview Beach or Lenape Park. The nuns went with us and we had a great picnic lunch and enjoyed all the rides. Connie, on an earlier post, you mentioned a shooting at 22nd and Market. Some friends were visiting in Wilmington a couple of years ago and saw a drug deal going down on that very corner near the Brandywine Methodist Church. How sad what has happened to our old neighborhood. Is the church still there?

The song, 'Palisades Park', used for this videoclip, was written by Chuck Barris, who later hosted the 'Gong Show'. Freddy Cannon performed the song. I first heard 'Palisades Park', on a transistor radio, while on a school bus trip (St. Hedwig's grade school graduation trip), in 1962, to an amusement park called 'Freedomland', somewhere in New York, I think.

Joe's barbershop was at the far end of the shopping center. The Merchandise Mart housed many stores, Murrays, Mullins, Sun Ray Drugs, Asam Wallpaper, an Acme, Woolworths, Penney's, Oppenheimer Collins, Braunsteins, Poole's, Carousel Gift Shop, and of course Strawbridge & Clothier. Message: To Gia,

Several years ago I worked at the A.I. DuPont Institute(that's what is was called back then), and they told us the wall was built by Alfred I. DuPont after he lost the family vote to take control of E.I. DuPont Company, and constructed it to send a strong message to the family to keep off of his property.

Message: Connie - thanks for getting back with me. Those old army barracks were known as Millside. Also, that was a cute story. It's a shame you two weren't able to connect. So sweet!

Message: Diane - I remember the old Army barracks when it was a housing development. I may have visited that school while in George Gray. They took a bus load of children to meet the children in a school in that area. One little girl and I hit it off and we exchanged telephone numbers but neither of us wrote them down! I remember while on the bus to return to George Gray I was writing my number on the window of the bus and she was writing hers in the air, but neither of us wrote the other's number on anything.
