Message: Al,
Shallcross Chevrolet was located around Middletown and he did have a son (maybe 2) who drag raced legitamately at Cecil County drag strip and others in the area.
I remember drag racing in Brandywine Hundred on Mt Lebanon rd. They had the 1/4 mile marked on the road. The road narrowed quickly and went down a hill shortly after the 1/4 mile so it was very dangerous.
A lot of the drivers hung around the Charcoal Pit on Concord Pike. I don't remember any crashes.

Message: Hello Pat, Ok your on. Do you or anyone else rememeber the "Drag Strip" the Chuck Wagoners frequented. (Circa 1957-1962) I think it was on or near Milltown Road but I'm not sure. Fun times. We would caravan sometimes as many as fifty cars, park them in a near-by field then walk to an enbankment we used as bleachers to watch not one but sometimes a dozen or more race. We had race coordinators and starters. The police would join us ocasionally which would cause a grand exodus out the back of the parking field onto the dirt roads. Those that went out to the main road emnded up with tickets, mostly for trespassing and illegle parking. I remember it was rare for the police to be able to ticket the racers mainly because the crowd was so big or they were "gone" as soon as they raced. One the Corvette racers was a guy whose Dad owned a chevy dealership in Newark. I think the name was Shalcross. Wasn't ther a Shalcross Chevolet Dealorship in Newark?

Read in the paper yesterday or today that the City will soon be taking it over, not running it but taking control of ownership. Not in too bad a shape either. Good thing the closing happened in the winter when it didn't need a lot of care.

I used to pass it everyday on my way to Warner. It was right outside that store that I first saw a 1956 Lincoln Continental. Dark blue. The most beautiful car I had ever seen. It must have belonged to a Doctor. I had a copy of Popular Mechanics at the time and they listed the cars and their cost. In 1956 you could pick one up for $9,507 list price. That was such an unfathomable figure at the time that I've always remembered it.

I remember finding the first Johnny Ray recordings there, as well as The Four Aces/Al Alberts record of "(It's No) Sin" on its original Victoria Records pressing out of Philly, several months before it was picked up by Decca (I think it was Decca).

Message: Connie, Could the store where you bought the tent have been L & H wonderland? It was the one that burned down in the mid fifties killing a fireman when a refrigerator fell on him in the basement level. And the Wanamakers thing, There was a men's clothing store across the street (on the hill side.) It was Mansure and Prettyman's which sold upscale mens clothes. Their main store was in the Du Pont building. Additionly, there was a small strip mall at the end of the bridge. I think Justis Brothers had an appliance store in there along with another merchant or two.

He was one of the very few original members of "Easy Company" of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne who made it from D-Day in Normandy to Hitler's homeland without being wounded or killed. Message: I was a member of Boy Scout Troop #65 in Elsmere (Elsmere Presbyterian Church sponsored), 1952 to 1957. My father was the Scout Master 1955 to 1957 replacing a Mr. Bazzolli (sp). Every year, the troop stayed at Camp Rodney's Windy Point camp site, just behind the cliff overlooking the bay. I remember the pool being built my last year as a member (1957). When I became an Explorer, the group would go to Brown's Lodge for weekend retreats several times a year. I also attended the 8th World Jamboree in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario in 1955.

I reached the rank of "Star, needing just one more Merit Badge, "Life Saving", to became the "Life" rank. Entering high school and 'girls' was cause for me to quit scouting, but it was a great experience. I still remember the Morse Code and once a Scout, you can never forget the Motto, Oath and Scout law!

Be Prepared!!!
