Message: Wasn't the space between Jefferson and Madison called Wollaston Street? At sixth and Jefferson there was still a farm house in the late 40's on the north west corner. The space between Madison and Monroe was where horses were stabled when farmers came into sell on Madison Street before the trucks of later years. You got into it from fifth street behind a brick wall if memory serves me . That was over sixty years ago though and I was just a little guy.

I lived on Montgomery St. (Street between 4th & 5th and Madison & Jefferson) Could the "space" you refer to actually be my street, Montgomery St.? As a kid in the 40's I knew every alley or empty lot in that area, but don't recall the "space" you specifically refer to.

Message: Ray and Dave,
Remember the King's and Queen's chairs(natural formations) in the Rocks at West End park ? Another good place for young loves. The pavillion or Roundhouse, as we called it, was a good place to get out of the rain, and if it was heavy rain and windy, we climbed the center pole into the wooden spokes. How about the mulberry tree on the hill behing the playground on the Franklin St. side ? When John Golden left for the night he made sure we were all out the park. Of course we were right back, and I'm sure he knew it. In Canby park there was a second Indian head carving just a little upstream. Never found out about the history of the carvings. The Lion's cage was a good place to throw cherry bombs and M-80's into. My grandmother used to make tea from sassafras. Now its been labelled carcinogenic. We use to pull out the small saplings and chew on the roots. Does anyone remember the demolished stone house just inside Canby Woods behind the ballfields off Oak St. Never found out that history either. I remember people riding horses through the woods and stopping at the natural spring fed water trough.
Jerry Lank,
Tell us about the "space " between the houses. You sparked my curiosity.

Message: Delmer: I had forgotten the hand-dipped ice cream at Brown's Drug Store. I'll bet that's where I developed my love of homemade ice cream. The homemade stuff tended to have little crunchy pieces of ice in it. Chocolate was my favorite.Breyers was the only commercial product that came anywhere near the GOOD STUFF. Out here on the West Coast, I can still buy Breyers. I remember touring their building, as a kid, on Market Street, Thanks for jogging my memory.

Message: ditto to Ray and Jerry. We spent each summer building forts in the Canby woods. This didn't make Johnny Golden or Bus Zebley too happy. I remember another cop who we called "210" chasing us through the woods after Mr. Golden retired. Spent lots of time "soaring" via the Lions Cage entrance. The soars led us from Canby West to almost South Union Street. Played lots of sandlot Baseball during the day and through the evening at Bus Zebley Midget League with Bus umping the game.

I know I'm somewhat older than you but I to remember what was then called West End Park. As a younger kid I thought those rocks we used to climb were Mount Everest and then as I got older the old pavillion there was a good place to swap spits with the gals. And how about going to Canby Woods and thinking you were in some mystical place when you got to Indian rocks and looked for the Indian head carving in the one rock. And what kid didn't put a penny on the railroad tracks that ran through canby woods just to see it get flat and larger. Myself and a neighbor, John Bonkowski use to go in that same woods and find and dig up the root for making rootbeer soda and take it home for his mother to make it. Those were the days. Then later that week he and I and his Brother Tom would climb the fence to their backyard and swipe us a couple bottles of the soda. I think his Mom Knew what was happening to the missing soda but she never said anything. They were great people and great days.

Our Senior Play at PS duPont back in 1952 was "I Remember Mama", and I had the role (three lines total) of 'Doctor Johnson'. There were also "Senior Morning" shows each year, right before Graduation, put together by the students with little or no teacher supervision...in which good taste was ignored just for the sake of getting a laugh or two from the general student-body audience.

Message: I can't ever remember going to a Resturant with my Parents as a kid. It just wasn't the way my Parents would spend money. I can still remember my Mother talking about people who would go out to eat. She would say She could feed our Family for a whole week on what they would spend for one meal. When I would take my Family out to eat I used to actually get a guilty feeling, thinking about Her up there looking down on me and saying "What a fool". However My kids really enjoyed it, Mama Robino's, the Groundround where they especially got a kick out of being able to throw the peanut shells on the floor and the Diners we used to have around our City till it started going bad, those were the days, gone but not forgotten.

Message: Wasaam's : The Wasaam's stores always fascinated me. I remember one in Elsmere, but most frequented the one in "Old New Castle", mainly because whenever we were in Old New Castle for festivities, or just for a picnic or crabbing and fishing or a day in Battery Park, we always stopped in Wassams's with the kids for water ice, ice cream, candy and to browse all the wares, gadgets etc. Wasaam's always reminded me of a larger version of my grandfather's store at Elm and Jackson.
I always wondered if the two were family owned in Delaware or part of a larger franchise ?

Message: Does anyone remember a corner store at Shallcross and either Lincoln or Scott called The Steak Shop in the 60's/early 70's ? It was up a block or two before Gallucio's on the opposite side. I always meant to stop in, but for one reason or another didn't. I'm not sure if it was a restaurant or steak sandwich place. I can't remember if it had an advertisement with its name in white letters on the window on Shallcross or a small wooden white sign with the name in black letters.

Also, does anyone remember a Lenderman family on the other side of Shallcross near the Memorial Hospital, within the first block off Van Buren, I believe? This would be in the 50's.

Ray Jubb : You got the spelling of kielbasa right, and yes, it was a "must" on Easter Sunday mornings. Another fond memory of the Easter holidays in Hedgeville and Browntown in the 50's and early 60's, were the good smells of homemade bread, hams and kielbasa being prepared on the day before Easter, Holy Saturday, all through the neighborhood.

Message: Jerry T,Harry, & Ed Begley: In the early 50's, I lived at 1825 Delaware Ave( now the site of a dog bisquit bakery shop).
Every time I heard the steam engines blow their whistles (probably somewhere near Wanamakers) I'd rush out the front door and down to the B & O station to stand beside the tracks as she rushed past, chugging, wheezing, and clanking. What a wonderful sight and sound.
My family would also go to Katies for spagetti and meat balls. Those were wonderful days and eats.
Later, when I lived in Ardencroft, I ate at the Dinner's Club and listened to the music.
Another favorite spot was the Old Mill on Rte 1. Thanks everyone for the revived memories. :@ :D

Oldeschool55: You were right about the sauce on the Post House burgers. It was more like a relish and reddish in color. I also drank the left over crab sauce from DiNardo's after the crabs were done.

Talking about sauces and relishes, how about oils on subs. There have been and still are, only two oils on subs which I would drink from the plate after the sub was done: Frankie's on Union St. and Casapulla's in Elsmere and the one on Rt. 1 in Rehoboth.

My favorite was and still is dipping buttered Polish rye bread (then from either Ragan's, Radulski's or Schelich's/Figiel's ,into the drippings from pan fried fresh kielbasa from either Bartkowski's, Barczewski's, Delaware Provision or Johnny's. After Johnny Kaminski's daughters sold the Market on Maryland Ave., the new owner from Yemen still provides the same quality fresh kielbasa, having retained a couple of the same workers in the meat dept. and Johnny's original recipe provided by one of his daughters.

The Farmer n' Dell on Rt 202 eventually was destroyed by a fire and so was the one on Naamans Road which later became a sports gym. The Longhorn became a disco club - Pulsation's.

A bar I went to a lot with my brother-in-law was JP's on Naamans Creek Road - remember that? He and I and our wives (sisters) went to the Tally-Ho(sp) a lot, also.
