don't think I was the guy that stopped you on Monkey hill, and I think you must be exaggerating at least a little because there is no way you could go that fast on Monkey Hill with out getting killed. Uncle was Harvey Leathem(Spelling?) am I right? Harvey was a grat guy and a great leader.

Got stopped by a WPD cop one night doing 60+ MPH going down monkey hill. Didn't get a ticket but the cop said he would tell my Uncle Harvey about it. He was on WPD at the time. I think the cop may have been Ray Jubb but I'm not sure. Met up with Ray at the EX Station in the late 70s in 336 Semi Works.

Old Neighborhood: 9th and Madison
Schools Att'd: #24, Warner, William Penn "60
Employers:
Message: We all swam in the nude at the YMCA. There was never anything thought to be bad about it in those days. And I don't remember anybody ever complaining about anything inappropriate either. I was also there every Saturday. We also did our swimming in the summertime at the "headgates" down on the Brandywine in the summertime during weekdays. That was also done in the nude. Never seem to be any problem with that. (Other then sometimes some of the neighborhood girls would sneak around and tie our clothes into knots and then giggle at us)

There's something that doesn't sound right there - I've never heard of swimming lessons needing to be taught that way! I do remember that Y, though, and used to go to family swim there. I guess I need to ask my brothers about this!

Good burgers in the cafeteria, played bumper pool.

Message: I don't care what year it was Joan, I enjoyed it. And three years later I bought my first brand spanking new car. When Gene Lamott became Mayor we(WPD)
got a $800 across the board raise, which He had promised if we would back him in his bid for the office.
He tried to back out of that promise but we held him to it(I won't say how, but we did) and that's when I bought my first new car, a 1960 Chevrolet Biscayne,
paid a whopping $2200 for it. It turned out to be the worse car I ever owned. Those were the days.

Message: Bruce: I thought I remembered an Arthur Murray dance studio in that location. It backed up to Baynard Stadium. I'm not sure if that is the one she taught dance in. I don't know if it was in that location in the 50's. I thought it was in town somewhere.
The Zutz Insurance Co. was actually called the Harry M. Zutz Insurance Co., and I think it was in town, within a block or two of Rodney Square, but I'm not sure. I remember walking into town with my grandmother once and meeting my Aunt for lunch, somewhere on Market, close to Rodney Square.
I didn't see either of these two businesses listed on this site. My memory is vague since this was in the early to mid 50's.

Message: I submitted the following as a letter to the editor for the News Journal, but they probably won't print it...-
RICHARD B. HOLMES - His obituary does not and could not do him justice. He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a friend, a singer, a dancer, a world traveler, a musician, a computer dude, a soldier, a radio personality, a role model, the first mayor of Elsmere, a contributing member of many communities, a church member, a student of life-long learning, a New Year's Day first stepper for good luck, and he was my Uncle Boyd. He was the unassuming life of every party. What I'll remember most about him was his zest for life and his sense of humor - wacky, one-liners, retorts, play on words, never off color, quick wit. My Uncle Boyd was one of the most delightful personalities I've ever or will ever meet. His passing has left a whole in my heart and has taken the wind out of my own comic sail. Richard Boyd Holmes - he walked softly but carried a big schtick.

Their headlines for the stories sometimes leave you wondering what they're talking about instead of stimulating your interest. I now mostly read the news on Delawareonline and get thoroughly amused by readers reaction to the stories. One even refers to the paper as "The News Urinal". Kind of crude but fitting.

Message: Bruce, I have been reading the Wilmington News Papers for longer than I care to remember. Back when they had a Morning News and Journal Every Evening.
This paper has gotten so bad in the past few years that it really isn't worth buying. They refer to all sorts of suburbs as Wilmington, they could develop a whole page of corrections if they cared to. I don't claim to be a winner of any spelling B's but I could run circles around their writers, they apparantly don't have "PROOF" readers, it's just plain ugly. It's a shame they have no competition because I believe they would go under if they did, I knoe I would try a new Wilmington Paper if there was one.

I notice that a few of the posts bashes the News Journal. I haven't lived in Wilm. for years, but sometimes check out their web site. What are the complaints about the paper? The way things are going we probably won't have news papers in a few years due to costs, internet, etc. I guess I'm old fashioned enough and still enjoy reading a paper. The news on the web site seems adequate for the area.
I remember when they used to publish a morning and afternoon edition and didn't have a Sunday paper.
Just wondering what is wrong?

In 1946, after serving in the US Army in London, France and Germany during World War II, he began his radio career with WILM. Even back then, anything that John Wayne was in was likely to be promoted there...especially from that Oater series called "The Three Mesquiteers", in which he often had a role. But I wonder if anyone ALSO remembers a packaged form of ice cream called "Skippy Cups" that were also around in the early 1940's? Skippy was a comic strip character, and the undeside of the lid featured him in a drawn gag cartoon. The cup was slightly larger than the Dixie Cup. Who remembers this product?
