Message: Webmaster, yes I did work at the old Krebs Plant.
Was in the magnetic tape production area (Crolyn),
then in the manufacture of chromium dioxide which was used in audio & video tape. About 1984, Dupont sold part of the Plant to Ciba-Geigy and the Dupont Holly Run Plant was built in the rear of the property. Holly Run was the manufacturing facility for chromium dioxide powder until the Plant closed approximately 2001/02. I worked there from 1967 to 1997when I retired. Ciba-Geigy remained in the production of red pigment. Believe
BASF now is the primary tenant at that site.

Message: Pemium's subs on Maryland Ave. were good too. I really liked their cheesesteaks though. Casapulla's in Elsmere was my #2 choice for subs, next to Frankie's when I lived in the Wilmington. That was after Patsy's went out of business. Now it's Casapulla's in the Rehoboth area. Both Frankie's and Casapulla's have differnt kind of oils , but both very good, besides their choices of meats, cheeses, veggies and rolls. Once I stopped by Casapulla's in Elsmere on a Sunday and thought they were open. After leaving the closed front door, a young guy came out the side door and said, " Sorry, closed on Sunday's. It's Vino day.

Were you at the Krebs plant? I worked at the old TRL site on Water Street (1964 - 1970) when it became the Development Lab, after the employees there moved to the new Chestnut Run location. The building was vacant for some time first.
A group of guys there liked Tom's steaks. I remember how greasy the exhaust blower was.

Message: RE Subs: Lehigh Subs were the best in Newport!
I worked at the old Newport Dupont Plant and we
ordered subs from Lehigh quite often. Tom's, on the other hand wasn't up to the Lehigh standard.
The guys on the shift "demanded" our subs be ordered from Lehigh for their tastiness. There's an
Exxon station now in the vicinity where Lehigh used to be.

Message: When I mentioned the Penny Hill Deli for subs it was because they were the best subs that were easy to get to. As for Casapula's - I assumed all former Wilmingtonians accepted that as a given as the Very Best Subs. I remember going in their shop in the 60s and waiting in line to take a number to wait in line. The Casapula shop at the old 896 just down from route 40 has great subs, too.

Message: Joe Pasquale : thanks for the info. on Helen at Frankie's. She is getting up there in years. I'll be coming up in the near future to pick up an order for the family. She told me of an attempted robbery once. One guy stood outside as a lookout, and as the other in the store started to come around the counter to her, she picked up her big container of ketchup and threw it at him. They didn't get any money, and got caught by the W.P.D. a short distance away. The ketchup on one gave them away.

Message: I sure miss those Subs and the culture of the sub shops! When we moved from Wilmington to Denver we discovered, to our great disappointment, that it was not possible to find real Subs out there. Even the ones that came close were missing at least two major ingredients, Capicola and the right rolls. Capicola was expensive and hard to find so they just did not include it. The wife and I resorted to making our own and came close but our sub still lacked. We soon realized the rolls did not have the right texture or taste. We searched and searched but found none that were good. By luck I made a sales call on one of Denver’s bakeries which had just installed a “Pressure Oven”. I asked about it and was surprised to learn that one needed to bake the bread at near sea level atmospheric pressure to duplicate the East Coast sub roll. Problem solved. Depending on where you were Subs had different names. I remember Sub, Hoagie and Grinder. Anybody remember other names?

I have to get up there and see if she is still open. Patsy's were good, Frankie's were good. I don't think there were too many bad sub places in the Wilmington area. Everyone had their favorites.

Message: About subs - My earliest memories of subs were getting them from an old guy at 22nd and Market named Ollie Ford. They were pretty terrible. Then we moved to Marsh Rd. and Phila. Pike just across from Penny Hill Sub Shop at Marsh Road. They were soooooooooo goooooooooooood. This was in the 50's. A guy named Pete owned the place. I remember standing there watching his crew make them. EVERYTHING was so fresh and top quality. A small sub was 40 cents and it certainly wasn't small. Many years later, Pete retired and sold the place to one of the employees and the quality remained the same. In the meantime, I had married and my husband worked for duPont. We were transferred all around the country. Everytime my husband travelled back to Wilmington, if he had time, he brought me back a Penny Hill sub. A taste of home! We lived in Tennessee, Michigan, Illinois, New York, West Virginia and no place had anything like a Wilmington sub from the Penny Hill Sub Shop.

Message: There used to be a store or store front on W. 3rd St., between N. Clayton and N. DuPont, across from the present William Judy Johnson Park, where they used to make and sell fresh ravioli( back in the 50's and early 60's). My Mom bought them there sometimes, and brought them home to prepare for dinner. I'm sure they sold other Italian foods there too. I can't remember the name of the store. Also can't remember the name of the park before it was re-named William Judy Johnson Park(maybe Clayton St. Park ?). I do remember how well kept were the porch houses on N. Clayton, between 2nd and 3rd with their tall Sycamore trees along the street. Another good memory.

Message: I remember those great restaurants too. When I was a youngster money was tight for our family and we rarely could afford to go into a restaurant to eat. Sometimes on payday (Friday) my dad would drive up to the back door of a restaurant and have them fill our pot with spaghetti. They would include the meatballs and sauce in a separate container and a large loaf of bread. Great food and enough to feed all four of us and then some for just a couple of bucks! Later it was a special treat for me to be able to take the family out to dinner at some of those same restaurants. In those days most everybody was willing to help where there was a need. I thought this was especially true in Little Italy.

Message: Hi Dominic Remedio, I worked for your grandfather and grandmother, back in the early 70's, it was very my first job as a waitress. Your grandmother Carmen was a dear and a very spirited women, I loved her! She and your grandfather were very entertaining when they were having a disagreement, believe me she always got the better of him, did not understand what the disagreements were all about, it was always in Italian LOL! I loved the pizza, wish I could get the recipe, is it still a family secret? Oh, his son Joe had a bar on Jackson street, it was not a family place, so I never entered it, for very good reason! Do you have any pictures of the rest, send to Webmaster, he'll put it on the sight.

This is the first tiime that I've been to this site. I came across it while trying to find information on Doc Graham who owned Graham's Meat Market on 8th & King Streets. Doc Graham took my grandfather and his two brothers into his home to raise after they were orphaned when their Russian immigrant parents died. I'm not sure if Doc Graham adopted my grandfather and his two brothers, but I know that all three of them took his name. I saw in some old posts that there were people posting on here that actually knew the Graham family. If anybody has any information that they think would be useful to me I would really appreciate it.

Message: For those who missed the article in the NJ on the 1st of March, here are the first verse and chorus of "Hail, Wilmington!". This was the winner of a contest in 1923. Composed by T. Leslie Carpenter, music, and Christina Howes Hadcock, lyrics. There is a link in the article that takes you to a website that contains a midi file that you can play....and, no doubt, sing along. The file is an organ solo, no voice.
Verse 1:
Hail Wilmington our city fair,
Resplendent on the Delaware.
A city in our first state,
Your name is writ among the great.

Chorus:
O Wilmington, dear Wilmington,
To us the fairest neath the sun.
Our fathers' deeds let us recall,
Like them for honor stand or fall.

For Patty's Day, why not a kazoo band, led by Ray, and playing this catchy tune?

Message: David, I never had Mrs. Eberson. I had Mrs. Wix for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. But possibly my neighbor, Bill Folger, had Mrs. Eberson. Sorry I don't remember a barber shop or the man selling chocolate bars. The picture I have is a 6th grade picture on the front steps of the school with Miss Baylis the Principal. It was taken in 1946 of the whole class.

Message: Danny Stat,
One more thing on Mrs. Bacon. She was the band director and music instructor at Willard Hall Grammar School at 8th and Adams in 1926. She's mentioned in the graduation picture in the Star on 13 June, page 33. The Star printed a lot of class pictures. I've seen St. Paul's Commercial and grade school pictures too. Ray, there was a Margaret Jubb in one.

Message: For the 9th Warders: In 1947, there was a city ice rink at 40th & Washington on land owned by the Oberly Brick Company and Diamond Ice & Coal. By 16 February, 3870 people had used it. As we say goodbye to this winter, does anyone remember that one and the ice rink? I can't picture where it sat. Maybe where the phone co. building is now?
