Lived in Delaware all my life until a couple years ago..and cannot remember
a worse storm than the one we got on Tuesday afternoon. Took me 7 hours to make
it home from Stanton to Willow Grove Pa..every major highway was either closed
from flooding..or had gridlock traffic. My brothers home in Newport was basically
destroyed by a small tornado...my wifes car was ruined in floodwater..what a
mess it was. I am sure most saw the damage from the tornado over at the airport
area..but there were several other small ones in different locations that caused
damage also. Thankfully there was no loss of life.

Dear Friends, Please check out today's article in the News Journal featuring
the plaque put up at 211 Market St. to commemorate the Adas Kodesch synagogue.
The history of the Jewish community in Wilmington is a fascinating one. The photo

Hi Harry, Great site and full of memories. Thanks for taking the time to bring
this to us. It's hard to believe that time has gone by so fast. I do remember

name "Cleland Heights", and I am grateful for the information. My aunt, Frances
Lewandowski, lived there in the early 1950s. I seem to recall semi-detached brick
houses. Sincerely, Donata Lewandowski Guerra

Greetings everyone from the land of hurricanes! Just got my power back after
Jeanne roared through. Once again, we were spared anything catastrophic at our
house. Yard is a mess with tree limbs, uprooted bushes, etc.; but we can deal
with that. It was a terrible storm. The power went out on Saturday night about
9:30 and we lost water. Water came back on this afternoon about 1:00 and then
the power came back about 1:45. Thank you all for your prayers. Never experienced
anything like this in old Wilmington. I do remember walking across Market St.
bridge at 5:00 PM during Hurricane Hazel in 1955 or so. I worked in the duPont
building and lived at Concord Ave. & Market. The buses were jammed so I decided
to walk. Not too smart of me. Almost got blown into the Brandywine. Connie, I
went to St. Patrick's from 1942 through 1949 so it was a bit after Whitey Ambrose
time. I remember my dad taking me for ice cream in the basement of a private
home on east 23rd St. down near Prices' Run. You got a triple dip for a nickel
and it was the best home-made ice cream I have ever eaten. This would have been
about 1939 or so. Delicious memory!

Here comes Hurricane Jeanne right at us! We are all very hurricane weary here
in Florida. We have been here 20 years and have never experienced anything like
this. Yesterday, in Publix (our grocery store) there were no carts available
for a while. People had all rushed out to buy supplies - loading up on water,
peanut butter, tuna, sardines, etc. - anything that didn't have to be cooked.
We have to be prepared to be without power and water. It is due to hit us on
Monday at 8:00 according to the latest projections. Please say a prayer for us.
If we have power and the computer works, I'll touch base on Monday after it goes
through.

In 1952 and before, the Latin Teacher at PS was an elderly old-fahioned lady
named Louise Van Dyke. Her brother worked in the Meat Department of Hearn's Market
at Concord and Washington. Latin was a struggle for me, but it laid the foundation
for me to become a fairly successful corporate hack writer later in life. It
was also great training for being able to work and solve crossword puzzles.

Cleland Heights. Does anyone know how this area got its name?
George Mc Govern Middletown, De USA - Thursday, September 09,
2004 at 14:27:42 (EDT) In partial answer to the above earlier question - I've
got a photocopy of several maps, one dating from 1881 that shows the Cleland
Heights area as a 94 acre parcel owned by A. C. Cleland and a 1893 map showing
a 92 acre parcel as the A. C. McClelland Estate. Most neighborhoods were named
after the family that developed them or "sold the farm", so to speak.

I graduated from P.S. duPont in 1966. To answer Bob Wilson's question, P.S.
duPont High School stopped operating as a high school after June 1978. Also,
the murder occurred in the Spring of 1970. For your information, there is a book
all about the school entitled "P.S. We Love You" which was written by Ellen Rendle
and published by the Cedar Tree Press, Inc. in 1993. It is a very interesting
book and gives the history of the school from its beginnings in 1935 until it
closed its doors in 1978.

I should probably know this, but can anyone tell me the last year that PS
Dupont HS operated as a High School? I "lived" there for 3 years in the early
1950's, and had the good fortune to revisit the interior of the building in 2002,
for the first time in 50 years, at the the time of our 50th class reunion. I
believe that at least one student was murdered there in the late 1960's or early
1970's.

I also remember the air raid drills. One drill was to get under your desk & put
your hands over your head, the other was in the basement, against the wall. That
was at St. Thomas school. I'm sure our hands were going to protect us from the
bombs! We lived at 10th & Lincoln, & my dad was also a warden. I was 3 at the
time, but I do remember his wearing the arm band. We would turn out all the lights & the
adults would tell stories for the children. Didn't work to well, because we were
scared to death! Seems like a lifetime away, doesn't it?

As the "Warden in Chief" in my neighborhood, my dad was not only issued the
big white pot steel helmet with the CD logo in front, an armband, and a bucket
of sand. He was also given a thing called a stirrup pump, which, when its stream
of water was accurately directed, would probably manage to extinguish a cigarette
butt. I think that's what the sand was supposed to be used for, as well. One
of my dad's "deputies" was an enthusiastic teen-age kid who nearly got conked
by a guy and gal sitting in a darkened car on the local lover's lane during a
blackout. They were necking and had the car radio turned on, causing a dim red
glow to dimly light the interior. The "warden" rapped on the steamed-up car window
to tell them to turn off the light, and almost got rapped by the guy in return.

Joe, I also remember the air-raid drills in the 40's. My grandmother was a
Warden in the Ninth Ward. I believe the sand was meant to be used much the same
way a cat does in its "litter box"... 'cuz those drills sure scared the you-know-what
out of ME!! I was pretty young back then, and had a vivid imagination. I could
just picture those enemy bombers zeroing in on my house! Can't really remember
if we had gas-mask drills in Delaware or not, but when I lived in El Paso, TX
in '42-'44, we had them in school. I hated the smell of those rubber face masks!
Some time later, I had to have a tooth extracted (in the Medical Arts Bldg at
Delaware Ave & Jefferson), and I fought the nitrous oxide mask with tooth and
nail... I still remember that smell to this day.

I'm old enough to remember the air raid drills during World War II. At Alexis
I duPont Elementary School on Kennett Pike we had to wear little dog tag-type
ID tags. Like school fire drills, we had air raid drills when we were marched
to the basement and told to sit down on the floor next to the wall. At the time,
we lived in Westhaven and had an air raid siren on the utility pole behind our
house. We had what was called "black-out curtains" presumably to keep enemy bombers
from using our house lights as a target. My father served for a while as an air
raid warden. He was issued a funny white helmet and a bucket full of sand. I
don't believe he ever understood what he was supposed to do with the sand.

CA Jones from downstate. Are you Cathy Jones? If so, we went to Harlan and
PS together. I left in 68 (with, unfortunately about 30% of Wilmington) and ended
up in New Castle and WIllima Penn. That brings me to Routes 13/40. My father
owned the Grecian Diner across from Shooters Supply and the old Crab Shack on
13/40. It was a Hollywood Diner until he bought it in 69. It's now in Boston
known as Kelly's Diner. We were there a few years ago and it was neat to see
the old place thriving in the middle of a city. My father's cigar burns are still
on the chopping blocks! The Rooster in Glasgow is on the site of the old Tankee
(formerly Farmer in the Dell) Restaurant that burned down a few years back. The
Glasgow Arms was where Arby's now is. It's a shame. It was a cozy restaurant.
The former owner did make another go of it about 12 years ago, but couldn't make
it come back.

the Chuck Wagon, but don't remember a Red Barn in Glasgow, but I'm not at all
familiar with old Glasgow. Do you think they could have been the same corporation,
with two restaurants? In the median of Route 40, at 896, across from the Glasgow
Arms, there was a diner for many years, was that one of the Hollywood Diners
chain, anyone remember? There's a McDonalds or Burger King (or some such) there
now.

Another place on the 13/40 corridor that is gone is Clemente's Bus Station..used
to take the bus to and from there every weekend when i was in the service. Someone
mentioned the Lynnhaven. my friend Ralph was the chef there for many years. Other
places on Route 40 were Sonny's..Rose's Diner..Bastille's nightclub. There was
also a sub shop down near the 13 40 split that I cant remember the name of..but
they made wonderful subs.

The Red Barn on Rt. 40 at Glasgow (I think it was called that) had a fire
about a 2 years ago and was torn down. In its place is now a restaurant called
'The Rooster' or something like that - I'll check it out this week. Also, the
Lynnhaven Inn is gone. It was on Rt 40 where the State Police bldg. was. I think
that is gone also...

Just read the Merryland Roller Rink is no more, my grandfather, who owned
a motel in Glasgow, sold the land to them that the rink was on later we sold
the land for the Stuckeys. Had a lot of good times and not so good times there,
my family left the motel one evening and turned on Ott's chapel road to Drive

yards away. We lived what seemed like all over the county, Newark, Glasgow, Fairfax,

OH YEAH! Sounds like a great idea to me, Connie. And Kahunaville, near where
the Wilmington Blue Rocks play? It's huge! A bit noisy, but like you say, Harry,
they're always ready for a crowd. Okay you out-of-towners, start asking your

Connie, I like the ‘meeting’ idea - I’m always ready for a get together. As
far as a ‘place’, I’ve been to the ‘Kahouna’ (sp) for several get togethers.
They have the room inside and out and they are always ready for a crowd – especially
now with their big deck. But, we’re talking winter time. We could pick several
places and ‘rotate’.
I use to sell my ‘snow balls’ from my wagon with a block of ice and an ‘ice scrapper’ (which
I have pictured somewhere on this site). And the ‘cellar stores’ in the Flats
on 6th between Springer and Bayard was first Kelley’s and then Montgomery’s.
My father sent me there every Sunday to get the Sunday Star and the Bulletin
newspapers. Also, speaking about the ice houses, how about the Diamond Ice & Coal
plant near 10th and Bancroft Parkway. The odor from the ammonia was everywhere.
By the way, Lenape Park is closed for the winter. The rides are gone and the
name is now ‘Main Line Park. Also, no alcohol!! A lot of corporations, etc. have
gatherings there and the park supplies the food.

GET TOGETHER: Connie, I'm assuming anyone who comes home for the holidays
will have a place to stay, or make their own arrangements? As for Lenape Park,
I don't think it's open in Nov-Dec? We don't want this to get too complicated.
If we can find a date suitable to the out-of-towners, we can pick a place most
would know. Depending on how many, and when, we should be able to find somewher
to meet, even around the hoildays, in or around Wilmington. But FIRST we have
to know when and how many we're talking about? Then we can deal with the where.
My partying days are few and far between these days, but if another OldWilm buddy
is willing to help, we can make some phone calls. PS. I'm on AOL and I have mail

Hello from Key Biscayne, Florida where things are getting somewhat back to
normal after a very long, drawn out visit from hurricane Frances. It was nice
to finally see the light of day after living for over three days behind hurricane
shutters. I decided not to evacuate this litte barrier island between Miami and
Miami Beach and just hope for the best. Thankfully the eye of the storm mmissed
Miami, unlike hurricane Andrew, and damage here is minimal. I walked along the
ocean today and other than some extra seaweed things were quite normal with the
sandpipers and seagulls running arund looking for a meal. Thanks for your kind
thoughts and wishes which are much appreciated. My best wishes to other former
Delawareans who are also in Florida. I remember a hurricane that visited Wilmington
around 1954 or 1955 when I was in Delaware Hospital bringing a new baby into
the world. I can't remember the name of the storm and since I had a new baby
in both years I am not sure which year it was. Again, thanks to all.

School has started again, without us...sigh. And I'm just tossing this on
the table for a couple of months down the road: It seems many of us still live
in or near Dear Old Delaware, and hopefully those of you who live in Far Away
Places, with strange sounding names, may still have family here, and want to
come and Touch the Green-Green Grass of Home again. Would any of you consider
getting together during Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays? Maybe for lunch or
just a drink one evening? We can put faces to our 15 yr old minds ;o). No pressure,
just a thought. Spouses and significant others are more than welcome, as long
at they don't mind that some of us are single and will come alone? Lets toss
it around for a while? No doubt, dates and times will be more flexible to those
of us who won't have to travel. So you out-of-towners, who might be coming home
will need to get the ball rolling, so we can plan when / where? It doesn't have
to be fancy, but it can be enough want it to be, or just a local pub. I even
think the Blue Lantern might still be on Old Capitol Trail? And the crowd at
the Deer Park may be a little young for us these days, but it's never closed.
I'm flexible, so if someone has a better idea, go for it: just count me in :o)

I was 12yrs old that year. I have a friend who is doing research on the foreign

if it was somehow related to the out-break as I seem to remembered. I could be
