Employers:
Message: Danny, Thomas Edison did not hold his son William in high regard. William lived on Hopeton Road in Westover Hills and was the only child to contest his father's will. There were six children, three each by two wives. From nps.gov, "Relations between William and his father were strained. Edison once responded to a request for money from Blanche Edison [William's wife] by writing, "I see no reason whatever why I should support my son. He has done me no honor and has brought the blush of shame to my cheeks many times." Like his brother he turned to farm life, breeding chickens. He died on August 10, 1937. "
I think that most of his work on inventions centered on improvements to the radio.

Message: I remember my father taking me to a matinee performance at the Playhouse in the Hotel DuPont to see Blackstone the Magician. This was in the early 1950's. In one illusion, Blackstone floated a lit electric light bulb into the theater, over the heads of the people in the audience; later, I read that a special light bulb had been constructed for the magician by Thomas Edison. I also remember that Blackstone threw playing cards into the audience which sailed into the far recesses of the theater.

Message: Since many of us have shared our childhood memories of the Christmas lights on Market Street, it's probably not off topic to note that today, October 18th, is the 80th anniversary of Thomas Edison's death, in 1931. Edison, of course, was the man who invented the electric light bulb. The anniversary of his success in building the first working light is also this week, on Friday (the 21st); this happened in 1879, not far from Wilmington, in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Similar to the recently departed Steve Jobs, Thomas Edison gave our parent's and our grandparent's a much better world; I think most of us would agree.

Message: I am inspired by only two things along Market Street today. First, they have a security force in place that can be seen all day long. Second, and more importantly, they have a statue of Tom Maloney between 8th and 9th Streets. Tom's wife, Linda, was a co-employee of the County Register of Wills with me but I didn't meet and get to know Tom well until a few years before his death. He was always interested in innovation in criminal justice and committed to betterment of the city......a daunting, maybe impossible task. Good to see his efforts recognized though.

Message: I can remember walking up and down Market Street at Christmas time holding my Mother's hand and almost being bumped to death by the crowds walking the sidewalks. Won't happen again, not on Market Street. Downtown Killington could have the greatest stores and resturaunts in the world and it would not help. Until they figure out how to get into the downtown area without passing through the jungles,
it's not going to happen, sorry to say.

Message: On Moore Street between 28th and 29th, there used to be a row of old garages. A guy named "Reds" worked on Indian Motorcycles there in the mid-'50's, after the Indian Motorcycle company went out of business, which happened in 1953. I remember walking down that little street (in those days, it wasn't much more than an alley) with my friend Billy Missimer and seeing a couple of the old Indians with their art nouveau, full skirted fenders parked in a row in front of Red's garage. There was something about "boys" and motorcycles; there still is.

Checking the Archives on this site, Ralph Pryor posted that Jake was mugged and robbed in broad daylight at 3rd and Shipley by 3 guys in the 1970's, and never seen in Wilmington again. What a sad ending for the poor old soul ! Don't know anything else about him. There used to be a picture of him, hanging in a bank on Union St.

Yep, good times at the Anvil Inn duing those years, and the girls, the cars and the music in 1965 were great. Sounds like you're a contemporary : same neighborhoods, St. Hedwig's( class of 1962), B&O R.R.( trackman, summer of 1968).

I enjoy this forum as a place to 'slip away' from the very real cares and tragic news of the day. This message board provides a safe place where we can revisit an earlier time to share memories of our youth and our neighborhoods, which for a time, seemed as if they were the whole world...... Delaware Online will give you the news of the day, if that's what you want to read.

Message: PAT - speaking of 'fix anything' people - remember the shop next door to Piane's restaurant? Until the old man died, that was the only frame building remaining on that side between Vandever and 22nd. It was a one story darkened brown wooden shingle building. It looked like Ziggy's little house between tall buildings.
There was another guy, Mr. Donovan, who had a very little shop on the vacant lot next to the foundry at 22nd and Tatnall. It was about the size of a small room and completely filled with toaster and other items waiting to be fixed.
I guess these three places were our "Emmetts" of Mayberry.

I also remember the American Store across the street with the bread box. The manager was a guy named Frank Kautz in the late 40's. Also, Broadbent the watchmaker had a store in that block. Of course, Richardson's 5&10 which has been mentioned before and the luncheonette in that same block. I agree today they wouldn't be leaving any bread in that box!

Once on this site were some comments about the tarring of Wilmington roofs. I remember the company(ies) coming with a black burner to melt the chunks of tar, then hoisitng it up, by buckets on ropes to the men on the roof with their long and wide brooms or applicators. I loved that smell. Does anyone remember the name of the company(ies) and/or where they were located ? This would have been back in the 1950's.

I can remember when our sidewalk on Jackson St. and my grandparent's next door was brick, before being changed to concrete. Nowdays people are reverting back to brick, even on crosswalks, like in Elsmere. I think brick looks better , the older and more worn. Does anyone remember where were the old brickmaking companies in Wilmington located ?

made of a yellowish brick because that was what was being dug up for whatever reason they were digging. Then I got to thinking as I walked the hood that I haven't seen a brick sidewalk for years. And when I was young, and I don't mean just a kid, all the sidewalks were brick. I can even remember when I was on the WPD I watched Contractors digging up
brick sidewalks in the Hilltop neighborhood to concrete
the walks. I asked one of the Contractors why they were doing this and his answer was, "You don't think they would make these poor black families moving in this neighborhood walk on old brick sidewalks do you". So I asked him what they were doing with the brick and he told me they were using them for fill in various places. I then asked him if he would point out the walks they were going to dig and if I could come and take some brick home to build a patio. Myself and a couple friends came with a truck and took all the brick that were closest to the houses, because they weren't worn, and took them to my house where I built a very nice brick patio, compliments of
our new West side Black neighbors.

Message: Danny Stat : maybe the building was once a hall or meeting place for the members of Orangeism or the Orange Order or Orange Lodge , as it was sometimes called. Orangeism developed in Northern Ireland and Scotland and had some offshoots on the East and West coasts of the U.S. It was a fraternal organization with close ties to unionism, and was established in the U.S. for Irish immigrants. Only my guess.

Message: A Chocolate 400, as I remember, was just plain milk with chocolate syrup and lots of chipped ice. I have no idea why they called it a 400. There was no ice cream in it so it was thinner than a milkshake; but they were delicious. Never heard of them anywhere else but Wilmington and I have lived all over the country. My mother used to order them all the time at different soda fountains around Wilmington, so they go way back to her time and she was born in 1900!

Message: Jim Rambo : Hedgeville/Browntown might be running 2nd or maybe tied to the area you mentioned, Vandever Ave./Market St., as the most dangerous area in Wilmington. On a more positive, nostalgic note, I remember back in 1963 or 1964 when I was 15 or 16, walking with my buddy from Elm and Jackson, through town and out Market St. to the Sears at 40th and Market, about a week before Christmas. Between the Brandywine/Market St. bridge and that area, we were mesmerised by the Christmas lights and decorations on the houses, and groups of carolers strolling along that section of Market St. There was a certain pleasant and most peaceful ambiance in the air that night.

Message: Bob, it is good to hear from someone who remembers Dean Bennett! I keep hoping that St. John's will return as a functioning, prayerful parish as it once was. I read where the duPont's were instrumental in the founding of the parish. I would hope some of that family would come to its rescue. I suppose, though, as a sign of the times, since the neighborhood has deteriorated it would be difficult to attract supporting members who may well be afraid to venture into the area. So very sad.

Message: Pat, I was baptized at St. Johns. Dean Bennet was a frequent guest in our house. The female Dean, who spent the endowments, brought in a gay chriormaster and his "partner" the organist (no pun intended!). This duo has since left. The Dean wasn't fired, but went on an extended "sabbatical", fully funded! They spent money fixing up houses and all but gave them away. The gays and liberals took over the parish. I am saddened by all of this!

Message: I was so sad to read in the News-Journal that St. John's will be closing. I remember back in the 40's when Dean Bennett was vicar we kids used to play hide and seek in the church yard. He was so kind and patient and never yelled at us or made us leave. Sometimes he even played with us. He welcomed us as we got older to the Friday night dances (even though we weren't members of the church). Such a kind and gracious man. It is such a beautiful edifice. I can't believe it will no longer function as a church; however, in reading what has happened with some of the new directors, it seems as if it has become more of a social experiment - free piano lessons for the indigent in the neighborhood, etc. I was especially stunned to read that the last rector ( a woman) told one of the largest contributing members since he objected to the ways things were being run that he could take his money and leave - which he did! Then she was promptly relieved of her duties. A sad commentary on the state of things in old Wilmington.
