Message: Anyone ever caught any fish in the Brandywine or the Christiana/Christina ? I landed nice size catfish in the Christiana/Christina at the 'old bridge', next to the DuPont plant in Newport, and a nice size carp in Stanton, near where the Red Clay and White Clay creeks merge. The old fishing/crabbing pier at Battery Park in 'Old New Castle' was good for catching whopper sized channel catfish.

They evacuated the area near the Christiana River, including the Delaware Humane, and are expecting flood waters to come down the Brandywine. We were hit harder by that storm that went up the coast last year.

Message: Speaking of the gas shortage in the 70's. It caused
me to buy a Honda Trail 90 Motorcycle for back and
forth to work and running around town. It would go
forever on a gallon of gas, as a matter of fact it
only held a little over a gallon. It has been sitting in
my garage for years, only has about 4,000 miles on
it. If I weren't so damn old I would get it out and
get it running again with the gas prices of today.

Message: Jerry, we didn't have many dances either. In my Freshman year of 1950, there was one afternoon tea dance. There was a prom for the upperclassmen and we weren't invited. In our Jr. year, we had a prom and a Sr. prom in our last year. We weren't allowed to wear strapless gowns or anything "too revealing". All dances were held on campus in the "Auditorium" with the nuns sitting in the balcony overlooking the dance floor. Also, no jitterbugging was permitted; however, the bolder ones would slow dance until they got under the balcony and then jitterbug like crazy and come back out slow dancing! Things were certainly different back then. I did go to dances at the other schools (Sallies, St. Elizabeth's and Sacred Heart).

Message: Pat LeVan : Did Ursuline have many dances when you attended ? I attended Archmere from 1962-66, and in the beginning, only had a Soph. Hop, a Junior Prom, and a Senior Ball. In my Junior year, we started to have a couple extra, general dances a year. The Norbertines, who were strict disciplinarians, in more ways than one, kept the dances to a minimum, putting us 'behind the times', with respect to dances, compared to Sallies, St. Elizabeth's, W.H.S. and the other public schools.

Message: This past weekend I had occasion to ride AMTRAK from Washington, DC to Wilmington. A while back, someone was asking about the Wilmington station. Well, it is really quite nice - nothing like it used to be. Also, was driven up Market St. and out Pennsylvania Ave. past Ursuline to Greenville for lunch. I thought the city looked quite beautiful. Saw the new Queen Theatre and several of the businesses along Market
were quite attractive. Quite a dose of nostalgia. Sure miss the old town. It was a beautiful place to grow up.

To answer Robert McKelvey's question, the D.S.P. Troops were numbered Troop 1, 2, etc. At the end of Washington St. Extension, at Penny Hill, is Troop 1.

Message: Ray : your mentioning of patrolling the train station reminded me of a time around Halloween in 1959 or 1960, when my buddy and I were 11 or 12. We took some very soft, rotten apples to the train station, and threw a couple down at the roofs of cars who were passing under, on Walnut St. We failed to see the white, W.P.D. shields on the sides of the black car we hit. To make a long story short, luckily we only got a strong lecture, rather than a ride downtown. The officers did mentioned that they would call our parents, which they did. No need for further details.

Streets clean between Washington St. and Walnut

Message: I made too many trips to the Wilmington Train Station to count. When very small we'd hop a train to western Maryland to spend time with my Mother's family. My father and mother often took me there as an outing to watch the trains come and go. Remember being told to stand back from the engine when they let off excess steam?
Years later, after I began working, I'd often hop the local to Philadelphia and walk up and down the main street shopping and enjoying the window displays of all the major department stores.

Message: Remember the 'Red Cap' baggage service at the Wilmington train station (uniformed men with red caps) who handled the loading/unloading of baggage using those lifts from down below somewhere. Scared me when I was a little kid, seeing that metal covering in the floor of the upstairs platform start to rise up, and it was noisy too. Can't remember if they were hand cranked or mechanized. I guess they and the 'Red Caps' are still there ? Haven't been in the Wilmington train station since May 1969, when I returned from Army Basic Training at Ft. Bragg, N.C.

It was a shaky black and white picture of a Phillies game at Shibe Park and I particularly remember catcher Andy Seminick batting. A short time later, I saw "newscasts" on WFIL-TV which consisted of an announcer reading articles from the Philadelphia Inquirer. All you saw was a newspaper clipping. Message: OLD TVs & SHOWS -My father was one of the first appliance dealers in Delaware to offer an RCA Color TV set for sale. It had about a 10 inch size screen. When a color TV show was offered -maybe a couple of times a week- everyone gathered around to watch this new miracle TV. Colors were no where near what they are now and every couple of minutes someone had to get up and adjust the colors.
Those were the times when you got to watch about 15 minutes of the program before the commercials came on and they were nowhere as long as they are now.

Message: Patty,
Oleo(margarine) was originally white - maybe off-white, when it first was introduced.
It created much controversy at first which brought the courts in as law suits were filed when coloring was added to make it look like butter.
I think it was first made in France.

My older brother, John, worked there one summer as a bartender, and made enough money in tips, to buy his fiance a diamond engagement ring at Carl Doubet's. The original site was purchased in 1760, by Bancroft Woodcock, and he built a small house there in 1766. The original house is not part of the present day structure, but subsequent owners built and revised, to the present day building. The History of the building can be found on Google. The views claimed to be able to be seen from that location, are almost hard to believe. What a rich history Wilmington has ! The early settlers are probably turning over in their graves.

Message: Ray : I do remember some of them hanging out and sleeping under the 'Arches', as we called the area under the railroad trestles. There was also a guy named John who was living one summer in an abandoned house on Lower Linden St., across from Benjamin Sklut's Hide and Fir Co. My buddy and I felt sorry for him, and used to bring him a couple sandwiches now and then. He showed us the tin cup that he had placed directly under a leak in the roof to collect drinking water when it rained. Another one, hung out under the arches, but his wife let him come home to take a bath and eat once in a while, and was really bitten up bad by the rats down there. One of his grandsons became a W.P.D. officer. Some had their own groups or cliques, depending on whether you drank sterno, wine or other alcohol. One who drank vodka wasn't allowed to hang out with the winos. Sad, but true.

Message: Within the last couple months, while browsing comments on either 'O.W. Facebook' or 'Memories in Wilmington' on Facebook, I noticed that someone mentioned ' Blue Flamers '. I remembered my Dad saying something about them, when I was a young kid. Then, one day, as a buddy and I, when we were about 12 years old in 1960, were walking down to the train station, along a dirt and gravel path, on the other side of the stoneblock railroad trestle, which ran parallel to Front St., and just about a block or so before the train station and the S. Markert St. bridge, we heard voices coming from some shrubs and bushes along the Christiana River. We had to investigate. There were about 4-5 men sitting around, while one took the contents of a can of Sterno and squeezed it through a dirty handkerchief, into a dirty old milk bottle, which they called, 'Squeeze'. They then proceded to pass around the bottle and take a sip of the liquid. The name 'Blue Flamers' came from the name of the bluish type flame which emanated from Sterno (' canned heat'), when lit. One of them decided to try to light a cigarette, when another said, " Put that out, before you blow us all up ". I guess the 'Blue Flamers' didn't worry about the 'Blue Laws' (sorry about the pun).

Part of the dirt and gravel path that i mentioned above, in now a roadway called Water St. between West and S. Shipley Sts. There was also another set of rairoad tracks, parallel to that path. They were either the original tracks that ran through Wilmington before the higher up tresle was built or side tracks for the industries along the Christiana River.
