What is this WEB Site all about anyway?
(Purpose & History)

The idea for this web site (first created at another location on the Internet as "teddy-bears" in 1999) came about following a reunion held for 'The Woodlawn Flats' Neighborhood residents on May 15th of that year.

I have had access to the Internet using my various computers over the years.  First, with the University of Delaware's server in 1984 by way of their computer club and in 1994, when I signed on with an Internet provider which allowed space for a personal web site.  From 1994 to 1999, I could not come up with a theme for a web site except for showing pictures of a teddy bear collection.

Then I attended the reunion.   During that gathering, residents from the 1930's, 1940's, 1950's and 1960's reminisced of those times - discussing stores, businesses, food and other nostalgia related to Wilmington.  So, I gathered some old pictures I had of Wilmington and scanned them, then researched the residents of the 'Flats' over the years and posted them on the teddy bear site.  The date was June 25, 1999 - the beginning of OldWilmington.  (See a Screen Shot from that site)

For three years that information just sat there with very little response.

Then, in March, 2002, I started receiving e-mails from visitors to the site relating to their memories of Wilmington from the 1940's and 1950's.  At one time, I could not keep up with all of the information I was receiving!

The original site began to see large growth and soon required more file space.   I acquired the domain names 'OldWilmington.net' and 'OldWilmington.com'.  I decided to go with the .net name so visitors could 'network' with each other.  The site has become a meeting place for old and new friends and the nostalgic memories that have been mentioned have triggered more nostalgic memories!

On February 24, 2005, the Wilmington News Journal did a 3-Page article about OldWilmington.net in their Crossroads Section.

With your support through sharing with others your memories, stories, pictures, comments and questions, OldWilmington.net will continue to grow!
